Plot summary
Reverend Cotton Marcus, an evangelical preacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, performs exorcisms he believes are frauds. His father raised him to preach, and he questions his faith after his son Justin is born. He agrees to let a documentary crew, Iris Reisen and Daniel Moskowitz, follow him, and he takes them along when the farmer Louis Sweetzer asks for help with his daughter Nell, whom he believes Satan is tormenting. At the Sweetzer farm, Nell's brother Caleb greets the visitors with hostility. Cotton stages his usual exorcism on Nell, shows the crew the tricks behind it, and assures the family that the demon Abalam has been driven out.
