Plot summary

Yasuhiko and Chieko Ono farm in a village in the invented Nagashima prefecture, where a young man and his lover also live. An earthquake strikes, and the nuclear power station close by explodes. The authorities tell the residents to evacuate and mark a security perimeter that cuts the locality in two, so that only half of the area lies in the evacuation zone. The Onos' son Yoichi and his wife Izumi move to another village. There Izumi learns that she is going to have a child and fears radiation may still reach her. Her husband's parents stay on the farm, refusing to give up their house and land.
