Plot summary
Sheila Bennet comes back from Cuba carrying $50,000 in diamonds smuggled into the country, and at Pennsylvania Station she realizes Treasury men are watching her. She mails the stones to her husband, Matt Krane, rather than keep them on her, and tries to lose the agent on her trail. Unwell, she almost collapses in the street and an officer brings her to a nearby clinic, where a doctor treats her for a cold and sends her home. Across the city, health officials confirm smallpox cases and begin vaccinating residents while tracing the people the carrier has met, not yet knowing who that is.
