Plot summary
Lou Ford wears a deputy sheriff's badge in a small west Texas town in the mid 1950s, where people take him for a mild man, patient and maybe a little slow. He hides another side: violent sexual tastes he calls his sickness. Sheriff Bob Maples asks him to roust Joyce Lakeland, a prostitute who is seeing Elmer Conway, the son of Chester Conway, the town's rich construction man. Joyce slaps him, he answers with a belt, and the two start an affair. She takes pleasure in pain and grows devoted to him. The pair scheme to take $10,000 from the older Conway, though Lou has his own intentions.

- 20th Century Fox originally optioned the project around 1956 as a possible starring vehicle for Marilyn Monroe as Joyce Lakeland, with Marlon Brando attached as Lou Ford and Elizabeth Taylor considered for Amy Stanton. It was shelved after Monroe's unexpected death on August 5, 1962.
- In the mid-1990s, after the success of Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino was attached to direct, with Uma Thurman set to star as Amy Stanton, Juliette Lewis considered for Joyce Lakeland and Brad Pitt attached as Lou Ford. The effort fell through after the September 11 attacks, because the script was deemed too violent.
- In 2002 Andrew Dominik wrote a highly stylized screenplay and hoped the film would star Leonardo DiCaprio as Lou Ford, Charlize Theron as Amy Stanton and Drew Barrymore as Joyce Lakeland. Dominik then lost interest in adapting a 1950s novel and chose to film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford instead.
