Plot summary
Leonardo da Vinci watches the Moon through a mirror contraption, looking for seas and life on its surface. When he and Zoroastro examine a human body to seek the source of life and the soul, the Pope orders an end to such inquiries. Leonardo is named a military engineer, then persuades the Pope to make peace with Francis I of France, whose court he joins at Amboise. Francis sends him and his assistant Cecco to a castle under construction at Remorantin, where he meets Princess Marguerite. Away from Rome, Leonardo keeps pursuing his questions about the soul, and Marguerite offers to help, turning his designs toward an Ideal City rather than the castle Francis wanted.
