Plot summary
Annie gathers a group of old friends, four couples, for a weekend away. She and Matt are engaged, and Jessie has brought her girlfriend Sarah. Jack lost his wife Mary a year and a half ago, and he has brought his girlfriend Lola, who is 22. Ruby and Peter, who are married and have three children, come too. Peter works long hours and the couple bicker constantly. Annie has convinced herself that Ruby and Peter are desperately unhappy together, and she has arranged the whole weekend as an intervention on their marriage. The friends confront the couple about the arguing and propose they divorce.

- Cobie Smulders broke her leg shortly before filming was due to start, and rather than replace her or use camera angles to hide the injury, Clea DuVall chose to include it in the story instead.
- The film was shot in Savannah over 18 days in the summer of 2015, where the heat gave cinematographer Polly Morgan heat stroke; the house used for most of the shoot kept losing power, leaving the cast and crew without air conditioning or running water.
- Every scene was shot with two cameras at once, one on whoever was speaking and one on the listeners, and because there were no playback monitors on set to save time and money, DuVall found it hard to act and direct at the same time.
- Clea DuVall wrote The Intervention for her close friend Melanie Lynskey, who read drafts as DuVall wrote them and had three therapy sessions before production to prepare for working together as actor and director.
- Tegan and Sara wrote and performed the song "Fade Out" for the film; Sara Quin had already written a rough version and rewrote some of the lyrics to fit, and DuVall used only songs with female vocalists on the soundtrack.
- Vincent Piazza, who plays Peter, was so nice in real life that DuVall said there were times during filming when she had to convince him to be an asshole.
