Plot summary
Ellis French is a young, gay Black man whose mother, Inez French, has turned him away, leaving him with few options for his future. He enlists in the Marine Corps and reports to boot camp on Parris Island, South Carolina, hoping to win his mother's approval. He meets the physical requirements at first, but keeping his sexual orientation hidden from the men around him proves harder, and drill instructor Leland Laws and fellow recruit Laurence Harvey make him a target. He also finds support among the other recruits.
