Plot summary
Nathan Zuckerman, a writer, lives quietly by a New England lake after a divorce and a bout of prostate cancer. Coleman Silk, once dean and professor of classics at Athena College, comes to him for help: forced to resign over a remark made in class, and widowed soon after the scandal, he wants a book that sets out his side. The project stalls when Coleman takes up with Faunia Farley, a younger woman who supports herself with menial jobs, one of them at the college. The colleagues who pushed him out and Faunia's ex-husband, Lester, a Vietnam veteran who blames her for their children's deaths, stand against the pair.
