Plot summary
Two brothers, Dane and Lucas, move with their mother Susan from Brooklyn to a small town in Oregon, the latest in a long series of addresses, and Dane resents it. The boys befriend Julie, the teenager next door. Exploring their new home, the three find a padlocked trapdoor in the basement and open it, uncovering a hole that seems to have no bottom. Each of them then meets something out of a private fear: a jester puppet follows Lucas, who is afraid of clowns, Julie keeps seeing an injured girl, and Dane glimpses the shadow of a big man. Julie proposes asking the house's former owner, Creepy Carl, about the hole.
