Plot summary
Lionel Worthing and David White are music students at the New England Conservatory of Music in 1917. They meet at a pub and discover a shared love of folk songs. When the country goes to war, the school closes and David is drafted; Lionel goes home to Kentucky and sets music aside to run the family farm after his father dies. A letter from David in 1919 says he is back from Europe and working at a college in Maine. A department-funded trip to collect folk songs on wax cylinders is ahead, and David invites Lionel to assist.
