Plot summary
Conrad comes back to his small town after bones are found and is asked to watch the police station. Charlie spends his first day at a new school, where Bobby bullies him, and goes home to a father dying of cancer. Lisa returns to a family that has not changed: her mother still tolerates her stepfather Sydney, and her sister Amanda is drunk again. Monica works as a maid and raises her daughter Sally, planning to turn the lives she sees in other people's houses into a book. Paul visits his parents after his father's stroke and is pushed to look up his former wife Laura and the son she has had since the divorce. Three teenage boys smoke and swap first-time stories, and Keen comes home from college to a pool party.
