Plot summary
In the Dark Ages, The Father lives alone in a remote cabin, with only his horse Jakke for company. He works as a bounty hunter, killing the beasts that terrorize a nearby kingdom. A horn blast announces each new bounty, and details of the target are posted outside the castle walls. He stakes the heads of the creatures he kills to his cabin wall. Between hunts he repairs his armor, sets traps for animals, visits his daughter's grave, and mixes a healing elixir from the blood and organs of beasts. When a bounty is posted for the monster that murdered his daughter, he is shocked.

- The first trailer, released in March 2018, drew over 5 million views and briefly became the most-viewed trailer on iTunes Movie Trailers, surpassing totals for Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4 and John Wick 3.
- Screened at Sitges and the Nightmares Film Festival as The Head, the film was retitled The Head Hunter after lukewarm reactions to the original name, at the suggestion of distributor Vertical Entertainment.
- One of Kevin Stewart's cousins suggested the water mine where the climactic fight was shot, a scene devised to leave the hunter without his usual weapons, and the crew had to enter it one at a time.
- To make the severed heads look decomposed, the crew bought old Halloween masks, stained them and covered them in layers of melted plastic to mimic rotting flesh.
- Swedish costume designer André Bravin made the title character's armor from leather, with faces and skin appearing stitched into the whole outfit; Jordan Downey called it more Leatherface-esque than Game of Thrones-style.
