Plot summary
In 1880 in the New Mexico Territory, Rio Cutler lives with his mother, his sister Sara, and an abusive father. One night Rio shoots the man to stop him beating his mother to death. His uncle Grant hears the shot, comes in, and attacks Rio. Rio and Sara escape on a horse Sara takes and hide in an abandoned shack, meaning to reach a friend of their mother in Santa Fe. They wake to find Billy the Kid and his gang there. A gang member goes outside to check the horses, and Sheriff Pat Garrett's posse shoots him.
