Plot summary
Jerry Ferro is unsatisfied with his life as he approaches forty. He works part-time as a carpenter and part-time teaching boxing at a fitness center near Los Angeles, drives a beat-up pickup truck, and then loses both his construction job and his girlfriend. Long ago he was an amateur Golden Gloves boxer with a hard left hand, and The Hammer was his nickname. Asked to spar with the up-and-coming fighter Malice Blake, he takes a beating but lands a one-punch knockout. Eddie Bell, a coach who trains boxers hoping to qualify for the Olympic Games, invites him to the tryouts. His friend and co-worker Oswaldo Sanchez urges him on, as does Lindsay Pratt, a lawyer who works out at the gym. At the tryouts, Bell's top light-heavyweight contender, Robert Brown, mocks him, and Jerry starts serious training.
