Plot summary
Callum Crane is a lawyer in line for a seat on the federal bench. In the same week, he forces himself on Sophie Lennon, a secretary newly hired at his office. She tells him she will report the assault unless he turns the appointment down, and he has no intention of giving up the judgeship. Crane wants her dead before she can reach the police, and he does not go looking for a professional to do it. The man he picks for the job is Nathan Corrigan, a young ex-convict, who receives an envelope of cash and a photograph of Sophie.
