Plot summary
John Ottway works as a sharpshooter at a remote oil facility in Alaska, protecting the crew from grey wolf attacks. His wife has died of a terminal illness, and he is devastated. On his last day at the site, he considers suicide. The next day he boards a flight to Anchorage with other workers from the site, and a malfunction sends the plane down in an icy wilderness. Ottway survives the crash, and he takes shelter in the wreckage. He believes the group may be inside a wolf pack's territory.

- The film's crew bought four wolf carcasses, two as props and two for the cast to eat, which angered environmentalists because the film depicts wolves negatively. Groups including PETA and WildEarth Guardians then launched boycott drives against The Grey.
- Bradley Cooper, who had worked with Carnahan on The A-Team, was originally cast in the lead role, which was first imagined as a much-younger character. Cooper was eventually replaced by Liam Neeson.
- According to Empire magazine, director Joe Carnahan urged Liam Neeson to "channel his grief" over the death of his wife Natasha Richardson while shooting the climactic scene in which Neeson's character writes a letter to his wife.
- Open Road Films promoted The Grey using comments tweeted by film critics in the third trailer, the first time tweets and Twitter handles from professional critics had been used in a film trailer.
