Plot summary
Seventeen years after his son's death, Mac McDonald's bitterness damages his police work in Memphis and makes his home tense: money is short, arguments with his wife Sara are frequent, and their surviving son Blake has fallen in with a bad crowd and risks failing school. Mac is paired with Sam Wright, an officer and part-time pastor. Sam feels called to preach like his grandfather, leads a small new church, and polices to provide for his family. A promotion to sergeant makes him question where his true calling lies. The two men must find a way to work together despite their differences, including race.
