Plot summary
Amy Loughren is a single mother who works the night shift in the intensive care unit at Parkfield Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. She has cardiomyopathy and tells no one at work, because she lacks health insurance and needs four more months on the job before coverage for a transplant will apply. The hospital hires Charles Cullen, an experienced nurse, to help with the night shifts, and the two become close. Charlie finds out about her illness and agrees to keep it quiet. Then an elderly patient, Ana MartÃnez, dies, and the hospital's administrators bring in state police detectives Danny Baldwin and Tim Braun. The risk manager, Linda Garran, insists the death was unintentional.
