Plot summary

In 2002 in Cleveland, Ohio, 21-year-old Michelle Knight is a single mother who has lost custody of her son Joey. On her way to a court hearing, she accepts a ride from Ariel Castro, an acquaintance. He locks her in his house and holds her captive. The next year Castro brings Amanda Berry into the home, and in 2004 Gina DeJesus is taken there as well. The three women are kept together, and Michelle refuses to be broken, holding on to the hope of seeing her son again. Castro controls their daily lives behind locked doors, and police believe Michelle ran away, so no active search for her is under way.
