Plot summary
Martin E. Blake, a British medical student, moves to a hospital in Southern California to begin his residency. He is charming on the surface but wants power over other people, and he resents the nurses he believes do not respect him as he deserves. After he fails to win over his first patients, his superiors lose patience with him. Then Diane Nixon, 18, arrives with a kidney infection, and he treats her. Diane and her family hail him as a hero, which lifts his self-esteem. As her health improves, he tampers with her medications and undermines her care while keeping up the appearance of a doctor doing everything he can for her.
