Plot summary
A heat wave has settled over Fenland England, and sixteen-year-old Goob Taylor spends his days as he has spent every summer: helping his mother run a transport cafe and picking beet in the surrounding fields. A school leaver in rural Norfolk, he has little money and few prospects. Then his mother takes up with Gene Womack, a stock car racer, and Goob is left as an afterthought in his own home, clashing with Womack over his mother's attention. Eva, a beet picker from abroad, arrives in the fields, and her flirtatious remarks give Goob something to dream about beyond the work and the cafe.
