Plot summary
Matthew Kidman is a high school senior and class president in suburban California. He has a place at Georgetown University but not the money to pay for it, so he raises $25,000 to bring a Cambodian student, Samnang Sok, to study in the United States. Eli Brooks and Tim Klitz, his closest friends, care more about mischief and adult films than schoolwork, and Matthew feels his own high school years have been uneventful. When Danielle Clark moves in next door, playful encounters lead the two into a tentative romance. Eli then tells Matthew that Danielle once worked in adult films, and the news unsettles the relationship.

- For the role of Danielle, the studio originally wanted Katie Holmes, but director Luke Greenfield insisted on casting Elisha Cuthbert, who had recently finished Old School (2003).
- Timothy Olyphant was cast as Danielle's ex-boyfriend and manager, Kelly, only after Brad Pitt passed on the project.
- Luke Greenfield and Chris McKenna both worked on the story and screenplay of The Girl Next Door but neither received credit; Blumberg, David T. Wagner and Brent Goldberg got the screenwriting credit. Greenfield said McKenna never got his name on it.
- Olivia Wilde made her screen debut in The Girl Next Door as high school student Kellie, a minor role, after she had originally worked on the project as a casting intern.
- Emile Hirsch was cast as Matthew after director Luke Greenfield saw an audition tape Hirsch had recorded for Gus Van Sant's Elephant (2003); Elisha Cuthbert was cast as Danielle.
