Plot summary
Alice Harvey is an assistant book editor in New York and an aspiring writer. Her boss, Jack, assigns her the re-release of Milan Daneker's novel Waking Eyes. Alice first met Milan when she was thirteen, at a party her parents gave; he came to the house afterward to guide her writing, and her father, a literary agent, approved. The assignment puts her back in touch with him, and memories of that time return. Sadie, her friend, stages a surprise birthday party where Alice meets Emmett Grant, a political activist she begins dating, and at the office she keeps asking Jack to read a manuscript she likes by Karen Malone.
