Plot summary
Robyn Callem and her husband Simon move from Chicago to Los Angeles, where Simon has taken a job in his hometown, and they plan to start a family. A chance meeting at a mall brings them face to face with Gordo Moseley, someone Simon knew in high school. Gordo turns up at the house again and again without warning and leaves presents, which unsettles Simon, while Robyn sees no harm in it. He asks the couple to dinner at his large house, and when they arrive he tells them the other guests have pulled out. A call takes him away briefly. When he comes back he says the property is his wife's and that she left with their two children, though earlier he had described himself as single. Simon, wary, tells Gordo to stay away, and the Callems go.

- Joel Edgerton spent the first two weeks of The Gift's shoot directing only, then started acting as Gordo, finishing all his scenes in seven days; once he did, his older brother Nash assisted him behind the camera.
