Walter Rilla
Biography
Walter Rilla was a German actor who worked in more than 130 films over a screen career that stretched from 1922 to 1977. He was born in Neunkirchen and learned his craft on the German stage before moving in front of the camera during the silent era, taking an early part in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's The Grand Duke's Finances in 1924. He settled in Britain in 1936 and for years was a fixture of British productions, cast as a villain or an aristocrat; his wartime and postwar parts often called for him to play a Nazi officer or agent. During the 1950s he went back to West Germany, where he made films and appeared on television, though he kept taking British roles as well.
