Plot summary
At a strict girls' school in rural England in 1969, Lydia Lamont and Abbie Mortimer, both sixteen, are inseparable. They scratch their initials into an old oak tree and promise to stay close, but Lydia senses Abbie slipping away from her. When girls begin fainting without warning, in class and in the dining hall, the deputy head Miss Mantel and the headmistress Miss Alvaro have no explanation, and Titch alone is untouched. Among the girls around Lydia is Susan, who wants to be Abbie. Lydia's older brother Kenneth, a loner who reads meaning into the landscape, offers her comfort at home, where their mother Eileen runs a hairdressing business. The art teacher, Miss Charron, tries to reach Lydia, and the fainting reaches her too.
