Mathew Baynton
Biography
Mathew Baynton is an English actor, writer, comedian and musician. He grew up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, graduated from Rose Bruford College and later trained in clowning at the École Philippe Gaulier in Paris. With the Them There collective, he helped create and starred in Horrible Histories, Yonderland and Ghosts. He co-created, wrote and starred in the comedy thriller The Wrong Mans. His television work includes Deano in Gavin & Stacey, Simon in Peep Show, Chris in Spy and William in Quacks; in You, Me and the Apocalypse he played the twins Jamie Winton and Ariel Conroy. He appeared in the films Bill (2015) and Wonka (2023). On stage, he starred in Holes at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and later made his Royal Shakespeare Company debut as Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He was a vocalist and guitarist in Special Benny and has released solo music as Dog Ears. He won the nineteenth series of Taskmaster.

Early training
Baynton earned first class honors from the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, then went on to study clowning at École Philippe Gaulier in Paris.
A first
Baynton made his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in January 2024 as Nick Bottom in Eleanor Rhode's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, later transferring to the Barbican Centre.
Behind the award
Baynton won the nineteenth series of Taskmaster in 2025, then won Taskmaster Champion of Champions 4 that December against Andy Zaltzman, Maisie Adam, Sam Campbell and John Robins.
Beyond film
Baynton was a vocalist and guitarist in the band Special Benny, and the group put out its first album, Toys, in 2010.
Behind the camera
Baynton and James Corden created, wrote and starred in The Wrong Mans, a BBC Two comedy thriller co-produced by Hulu that premiered in autumn 2013.
Beyond film
At the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Baynton took the lead in the first ever staging of Tom Basden's play Holes. The following summer, he played Gus once more in a London revival of that same play.
