Plot summary
On a rainy night in London in 1946, the novelist Maurice Bendrix meets Henry Miles by chance. Henry is the husband of Sarah, who was Bendrix's mistress until she broke off their affair two years earlier. Henry confides that he believes his wife is seeing another man, so Bendrix, his obsession rekindled, hires the investigator Mr. Parkis, whose young son Lance helps with the watching. The story moves back to 1939, when the affair began, showing Bendrix urging Sarah to leave her husband while he grew jealous of Henry. Sarah and Bendrix meet again to talk about Henry, and their careful, halting manner with each other stands against the passion of their earlier time together.
