Cyril Shaps
Biography
Cyril Shaps was an English character actor whose career in radio, television and film ran for more than seven decades. Born in London's East End, he began as a child broadcaster providing radio commercial voices from age 12. After World War II service as a warrant officer, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and won the Shakespeare Prize, then worked at Radio Netherlands as an announcer, producer and scriptwriter. His short stature and round face brought steady character work. In film he played the bartender in Lawrence of Arabia, Mr Pinkus in To Sir, with Love, and Dr Bechmann in The Spy Who Loved Me. He also appeared in The Madness of King George, and his last roles in 2002 included The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) and The Pianist. On television he acted in four Doctor Who serials and Dickens adaptations, and voiced roles in Supercar and The Adventures of Paddington Bear.
