Plot summary
On July 10, 1982, Denise Platt, an aspiring novelist, lives on Oak Street in Flowervale, Michigan with her husband Greg, their children Audrey and Brian and the dog Starbuck. The marriage is strained, and Denise privately considers divorce while Greg claims he delivers pizzas on the side, though the job is all he has left after a layoff. The next day Denise photographs a strange plant in a neighbor's yard; the librarian Mrs. Valcourt identifies it as Pleuromeia, extinct for hundreds of millions of years. A pile of animal droppings appears in neighbor Mel's yard, and radio broadcasts report rising solar-flare activity. In a storm, a huge white light engulfs Oak Street, the pressure shifts and the power fails. Searching for Starbuck afterward, Denise and Greg find the street surrounded by a prehistoric landscape.
