Plot summary
A chalk-talk artist stands at an easel that holds a sketch pad. On the paper he draws the cartoonish face of a man, then adds a bottle and a glass. When he lifts the bottle and glass off the paper, they become solid objects, and he has a drink. He gives the drawn face some wine, and it breaks into a smile. The artist draws a top hat and puts it on, and a cigar appears in the face's mouth. Wine, cigars, and a hat pass between the paper and the room, drawn lines turning into real things and real things turning back into part of the picture. The illusion is made with stop camera substitution: the camera stops, an object is changed or replaced, and filming resumes.

- The film is best known for containing the first animated sequences recorded on standard picture film, a distinction that has led J. Stuart Blackton to be considered the father of American animation.
- Blackton came out of vaudeville, where he would draw very quickly in front of a live audience and create visual surprise, and he adapted that performance style for film by giving his sped-up drawing act a cinematic spin.
- The technique helped pave the way for Blackton's later projects, such as Humorous Phases of Funny Faces in 1906, in which he used stop motion and cutout animation to bring chalk drawings fully to life.
