Plot summary
Charlie Banks and his best friend Danny grow up in lower Manhattan, where Mick Leary is a charismatic and violent local boy whom Charlie admires and fears. At a party in high school, Mick beats two jocks nearly to death, and Charlie tells the police about him. Three years on, Charlie and Danny are college freshmen at a liberal arts school upstate. Mick turns up on campus for what he calls a weekend visit, then stays on in their dorm room, borrowing their clothes, sitting in on their classes and flirting with Mary, the woman Charlie has a crush on.
