Plot summary
Jane is an operative for Hiller Brood, a private intelligence firm, and her boss Sharon hands her an assignment: pose as Sarah and get inside The East, an underground group of activists and anarchists that has attacked a corporate leader and promises two more strikes over ecological crimes. Living as a drifter, she rides trains and hitches rides until Luca, another drifter, helps her escape from the police. She spots the symbol of The East hanging from his car mirror, then injures her own arm and says the escape caused it, so he takes her to a house in the woods where the members live. Doc, one of them, treats her, and the group gives her two nights to recover before she has to leave.

- To research the screenplay, Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling spent two months in 2009 living as freegans, eating discarded food, and learned to hop trains, sleep on rooftops and join an anarchist collective.
- Felicity Jones was attached to play the East member Izzy but dropped out to promote her film Like Crazy; Elliot Page replaced her.
- Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling chose to have the group target the pharmaceutical industry rather than banks, partly because they had heard of drug side effects such as a quit-smoking drug that led some people to commit suicide.
- Production designer Alex DiGerlando turned an alternative lifestyle club in Shreveport, Louisiana into the house where the group lives, repainting its black-and-gold interior in shades of green.
