Plot summary
Robbie Hendrick is fourteen years old and lives in Mississippi, where another summer has begun. His mother has run off again, afraid of a breakdown, so Robbie spends his days caring for Fess, his half brother. Having a family is all Robbie has ever wanted, and Fess is the family he has. The days and nights pass with no word from her. Their older brother Lucas is also back in their lives. Robbie has to reckon with the possibility that the family he imagines may not come together, and that he could lose Fess, the only family he has known.
