Plot summary
In the fall of 1989, Dylan Jacobs, a mute and asthmatic boy, moves into a new house with his father Michael. In one room Dylan finds an old book and a dusty mirror; the book's pages describe how to summon a djinn and have it grant a wish. The ritual it lays out requires three drops of blood in the wax of a lit candle at one hour before midnight, with the wish spoken in front of the mirror, and it warns that the wish may cost the summoner a soul. Dylan says nothing to Michael. When Michael leaves for his job at a radio station, Dylan prepares the ritual and, in sign language, wishes that he had a voice. Strange events follow, and the djinn takes a humanoid form and hunts through the house for him.
