Plot summary
In the 12th century, Sigfried von Rhoneberg sold his soul to the Devil, who also claimed the family's eldest daughter in each generation as a servant. The present Baron von Rhoneberg lives with that inheritance, working at alchemy in a laboratory beneath his castle. When a flood destroys the bridge on their route, a busload of tourists takes shelter there for the night. The butler Hans shows them to their rooms and recounts the history attached to three of them. Over dinner the Baron tells the story of the family pact, and says that he never had a daughter. A young woman named Lisa Müller arrives to stay at the castle.
