Plot summary
Anna Jurin arrives at Saint Ange in 1958 to keep house, pregnant and hiding it. The orphanage in the French Alps is nearly empty: a boy died in the bathroom, its reputation suffered, and the remaining children were placed elsewhere. Francard, who owns the place, and the cook are what is left of the staff, along with Judith, an adult orphan with a mental disability who takes daily medication and insists that unseen children share the building. Anna hears footsteps and children's voices too, and finds that Judith hears them as well. Francard and the cook dismiss it as imagination and want the past left alone.
