Plot summary
The King family owns 25,000 undeveloped acres on Kauai, held in a trust that Matt King oversees and that expires in seven years. His cousins, most of whom have already spent their inheritances, are pushing to sell, and the offers are large enough to alter the island. Matt is a Honolulu attorney who lives on what he earns rather than on the family's wealth. Then a boating accident leaves his wife, Elizabeth, comatose. Their ten-year-old daughter Scottie has been bullying other children, and seventeen-year-old Alex is away at a boarding school on the Big Island. Matt collects Alex from school and takes charge of both girls while the relatives press him about the land.
