Plot summary

The last stages of a chronic illness bring Louise and Michael Straker back to the Texas farm where their father lies. Their mother, who has nursed him through the years, does not want the two of them there. In the barn that night she takes her own life. The siblings stay to keep watch over their father while he fails, and the nurse who attends him tells them what she once heard: their mother whispering to her husband as though speaking to another presence in the room. Michael then finds her diary, full of fears about an unnamed thing preying on her husband.
