Plot summary

The war begins in 2055, when an artificial intelligence detonates a nuclear weapon over Los Angeles. Much of the Western world then vows to wipe out AI, while New Asia, across East, South and Southeast Asia, keeps embracing it. From the orbital station NOMAD, the U.S. military plans to kill Nirmata, the architect behind New Asia's AI advances. In 2065 Sergeant Joshua Taylor is living undercover in New Asia with Maya, his pregnant wife. When their home comes under attack, Maya is believed dead. Taylor later works on a ground zero cleanup crew until General Andrews and Colonel Howell bring him into a mission against Alpha O, a weapon Nirmata has built that could bring down NOMAD. They show him proof that Maya is alive, and he accepts.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Creator (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The official trailer for The Creator was criticized in July 2023 for using footage of the 2020 Beirut explosion as a visual effects plate shot of a futuristic Los Angeles destroyed by a nuclear blast. The footage was first noticed by a Reddit user and then covered by the YouTube channel Corridor Crew.
  • Gareth Edwards estimated The Creator cost only $80 million even though it would typically have cost $300 million; the production skipped sets and greenscreens, sending a small crew to 80 real locations and adding visual effects only after the edit was locked.
  • Gareth Edwards initially planned to have a company specialising in AI-generated music replicate Hans Zimmer's style for the score and was satisfied with the results, but instead chose Zimmer to score the film originally.
  • The film was shot on the prosumer Sony FX3 camera, a rarity for a blockbuster; at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, panelist and director Louis Leterrier said the choice could "change cinema" forever.
  • Danny McBride and Benedict Wong both dropped out of the cast over scheduling conflicts; Sturgill Simpson took over for McBride, and Ken Watanabe, who had worked with Edwards on Godzilla, replaced Wong.
  • Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould earned a rare trifecta of Best Visual Effects nominations in a single year, for The Creator, Napoleon and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.
  • The assembly cut of The Creator ran five hours and used no temp music, only sound design, which Edwards likened to late-1920s talkies. It was then decided that no music at all be added during the editing process, to get the pacing and story structure right.
