Lawrence Makoare
Biography
Lawrence Makoare, born in Bastion Point, is a New Zealand actor who drifted into acting from road construction after a drama teacher singled him out at a class because of his height, and he began his career as a stuntman. He is best known for playing antagonists in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies: Lurtz in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), the Witch-king of Angmar and the Orc commander Gothmog in The Return of the King, and Bolg in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He also played Mr. Kil in the James Bond film Die Another Day (2002), and won over the director Toa Fraser with his performance as a warrior in The Dead Lands (2014). He is popular with Xena: Warrior Princess fans for two characters he played in the show's third season.

A role that slipped away
Filming commitments on Marco Polo kept Makoare from the pick-ups for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, where John Tui played Bolg in his place.
Big break
The Dead Lands director Toa Fraser did not want to cast Makoare as the warrior, but changed his mind after Makoare, given a few directing hints, delivered a performance that made Fraser weep.
