Plot summary
Swanson is an aging, upper-class man who lives on a boat and feels either apathy or resentment toward what surrounds him. He spends his days partying and wandering Brooklyn with friends who are equally privileged, and together they humorlessly ridicule the strangers and acquaintances they encounter. His father lies comatose, and the estate Swanson stands to inherit holds no interest for him. He mentions a brother who is institutionalized, and his sister-in-law appears to be his only familiar connection. Among the group is Cargill, whom the others keep mocking after he confesses that they are important to him, and who keeps spending time with them anyway.
