Plot summary
Arkin O'Brien served time and now fixes windows and doors for the Chase family, who have moved into an isolated house. His wife owes money to loan sharks, and the debt falls due at midnight; his weekly pay cannot cover it. To clear it and protect her and their daughter Cindy, he decides to break into the Chase home at night and take a valuable ruby from the safe. He lets himself in and finds the place silent. Michael Chase, the father, is badly hurt, and a masked man drags him into the basement. The phone is wired to a spike, the windows are boarded over and lined with razors, and the family is held inside a house full of traps.

- The original script, titled The Midnight Man, was at one point shopped as a spin-off prequel to the Saw franchise, an origin story for the villain John Kramer / Jigsaw.
