Yuri Stoleshnikov, once captain of the Russian national team, leaves the game after a missed penalty and a one-year suspension. Two years of unemployment end when Larisa Volskaya, president of Meteor and the mayor's daughter, hires him to coach the Novorossiysk club in the second division. She tells him the team has just sold two leading players to cover debts, and that his job is to keep the stadium from being replaced by a shopping center. The squad arrives overweight, hungover and concerned mainly with bonuses. Youth coach Berger objects to Yuri's methods, and the rehabilitation doctor Varya says the players are picking up too many injuries. Yuri's first match in charge ends in defeat.
