Plot summary
Ethan Daniels wants his father home for Christmas. He and his mother Gretchen, a teacher, have moved back to her hometown of Wilsonville while Kyle, her husband, is treated at a hospital in Germany for wounds he suffered on deployment. Melissa McCreary lives next door. She works all the time and keeps to herself. A landlord asks Gretchen to pass Melissa a message: Ramona, her mother, has died, and the apartment must be emptied by the weekend. Gretchen, who barely knows her neighbor, passes it on and offers to help clear the place out. Among Ramona's belongings Melissa finds an unfinished note that asks her forgiveness and says that before Melissa was born Ramona gave another child up for adoption. Gretchen, who was adopted herself, urges Melissa to search for the sibling.
