Plot summary
On Arthur Avenue in Cleveland, the neighbors light Christmas luminaria along their street every December. The tradition has been kept for forty years, and the street takes pride in it. This year the luminaria stay dark along the street out of respect for the Normans, whose teenage son Matt is seriously ill and needs a heart transplant. His parents, Ann and Mike, pray by his bedside at the hospital. Matt's younger brother, Tommy, has emotionally withdrawn from the people around him. The tight-knit neighbors on the street come together to give the Normans their support while Matt waits for a donor heart.

- Heaton began working on a treatment for The Christmas Heart around 2000 and pitched it to a Hollywood executive, but no film deal was ever confirmed. His sister, Patricia Heaton, later remembered the script he had written and sent the treatment to Hallmark, which bought both the treatment and the script.
- Filming in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in March 2012 ran into unseasonably warm weather, so the crew had to manufacture snow to make the film look like winter. They also made do with a snow bank they found in the parking lot of a church.
