Plot summary
In Gladbury, the Haddingtons make the village's candles, and the old story holds that an angel comes to the candlemaker once every twenty-five years and singles out one candle. Whoever lights it is granted a miracle. It is 1890, and David Richmond arrives as the new pastor. He preaches the Advent themes, lighting a candle each Sunday, and asks the people to put their faith in God rather than a candle. The angel marks a candle. Mr. Haddington wants to keep it, hoping their missing son will come back to live in Gladbury. When the candles are blessed, they are toppled, and no one can tell which one was marked. The Haddingtons hand candles out to villagers with needs of their own, among them a boy who cannot talk, a woman who wants a husband, and a blind man.
