Plot summary
Choir practice is what the officers of the Los Angeles Police Department call the drinking sessions they hold at night in MacArthur Park, meant to set down some of the pressures of the job. The jokes and pranks they play on one another there have a way of going too far. Among the men who take part are a veteran of the Vietnam War who has panic disorder, an officer close to retirement, a handful of younger policemen and one man whose views are bigoted.

- Novelist Joseph Wambaugh, whose book was adapted, took out a full-page advertisement complaining about what the film did to his novel and sued to have his name removed from the credits of the final print.
- Joseph Wambaugh called the finished film a "dreadful, slimy, vile" insult to every self-respecting cop in America, sued Lorimar and was paid $1 million in compensation, then bought back the rights to The Onion Field and Black Marble to keep more control.
- Director Robert Aldrich wanted changes to Joseph Wambaugh's script and hired Christopher Knopf to rewrite it, saying he thought Wambaugh was going to be very unhappy with the film of his work.
- Charles Durning said he based his character on director Robert Aldrich, calling him one of the brightest guys he knows and a man who never forgets he's the boss.
- The term "choir practice" has worked its way into police slang for an informal meeting after work, with alcohol possibly involved.
