Plot summary
The Great Patriotic War is over, and Yegor Trubnikov returns to the village where he grew up. The kolkhoz there is wrecked, poverty is severe, and most of the men did not come home; the community is made up largely of widows and women whose husbands died in the fighting. Trubnikov takes the chairman's post and brings his military habits to the job, driving the villagers to work without pause so the farm can be revived. He has to choose whom to send to the city for study and whom to keep in the village, and those decisions stir conflict among the people around him. District authorities resist his methods, and the villagers themselves are doubtful.
