Plot summary
Employees of a House of Culture have their yearly New Year's entertainment program ready. It includes dancing, singing, a jazz band and magic tricks. Word comes that a new director has been chosen and will arrive soon. Comrade Ogurtsov arrives and reviews the scheduled entertainment. He does not approve of it. Holiday fun, to him, means speakers presenting yearly reports on the club's progress and a lecturer on whether life exists on Mars. Only a few hours remain before the show, and nobody wants to replace the program.

- Lyudmila Gurchenko was rejected for the part of Lena Krylova by director Eldar Ryazanov and the artist council; another actress was hired but could not handle it. Ryazanov asked Ivan Pyryev to sign anyone but Gurchenko, until Pyryev saw her in a Mosfilm corridor and found her special.
- Eldar Ryazanov's first directing job drew severe skepticism: after watching half of the filmed material, the artistic council was convinced that Carnival Night would turn out to be a huge failure.
- Lyudmila Gurchenko sang "Love is a Happiness" ("Любовь — это счастье") for the film, but the song was not included in Carnival Night.
